What Are Sliding Head Lathes?

CNC Sliding Head Lathes — also known as Swiss Auto lathes — were originally developed for producing high-precision watch components. As a modern computer-controlled machine tool, the sliding head lathe performs machining operations with extreme geometric accuracy.

Unlike conventional lathes where the tool moves around a stationary workpiece, sliding head lathes allow the workpiece to move in the Z-axis while the tool remains stationary. The result: superior precision, tighter tolerances and significantly faster cycle times — particularly for long, slender parts.
